University of Gloucestershire men’s hockey win 8-7 in dying stages

Having not lost a game this season, UOG men’s hockey headed down the M5 to face Exeter 3rd’s in the final of the Western Conference Cup, after winning against Southampton Solent on Monday.

Last year’s club captain and current player Peter Rayward said on his teams 8-7 victory: “The penalty flicks went on a lot longer than we though it would. It’s not like sudden death in football or anything, if it’s equal after five then you go for another five. Really pleased at the end of the day.”

On his opponents, the 23-year-old said: “They are a big university and have lots of great players. We were really excited to win against them. I can’t believe it really!”

With Varsity coming up next month the newly promoted side will be hoping to uphold their 15 years unbeaten record against Worcester.

Rayward said: “We are really confident going in to that. We still haven’t lost this season so we go into that game with extra confidence. All of the side are really looking forward to it.”

Varsity commences at the start of next term.
