The FA Cup is the oldest national football competition in the world, first being played in the 1871-72 season.
Over the years it has become the most prestigious club competition in world football, with all 92 professional clubs of the English football league system being offered the chance to compete.
With the tournament consisting of teams from all leagues, often games come along in which the giants get slayed against all the odds. So, here are some of the biggest upsets in recent FA Cup history:
2013 FA Cup Final
Back in May of 2013 Wigan Athletic pulled off one of the great FA Cup final wins, beating Manchester City at Wembley to win their first FA Cup in the club’s history.
Football fans were left stunned as Wigan came out 1-0 winners in front of over 85,000 people inside the home of English football.
In the second half Manchester City’s Pablo Zabaleta was sent off following a second yellow card, leaving Wigan fans hoping they could end the season on a high.
Manchester City finished the League season in second, 11 points behind Champions and rivals, Manchester United. For Wigan however, they were relegated from the Premier League after finishing 18th. Despite their poor form in the Premier League, Wigan would denied all odds by beating Roberto Mancini’s side.
Chelsea 2-4 Bradford, 2014/15
Another upset for one of England’s biggest clubs. This time it was Chelsea who were left embarrassed.
In the 2014/15 FA Cup season, Chelsea were beaten 4-2 by Bradford at Stamford bridge.
At the time Chelsea were at the summit of the Premier League, firing on all fronts. They’ve enjoyed their time in the FA Cup under Roman Abramovich, winning the tournament an impressive five times.
However, despite being 2-1 up at half time against League One side Bradford, the Blues couldn’t see the game out.
Bradford performed one of the biggest upsets and comebacks in FA Cup history scoring four goals without reply.
Oldham 3-2 Liverpool, 2012/13
Oldham performed an FA Cup classic against Liverpool as they came out 3-2 winners at Boundary Park.
Despite big name players such as Luis Suarez and Steven Gerrard being called upon, the Reds couldn’t stop a Matt Smith double as League One side Oldham progressed through the FA Cup fourth-round.
Seven-time FA Cup champions were left rocked as they fell short in stadium full of fans who won’t forget this match in a heartbeat.
