Team of the Season: Picks for Sky Bet League Two’s best players

With the announcement last week of the Sky Bet League Two Team of the Season, we’ll take you through the numbers that show why each player deserves his place in this year’s team.

VĂĄclav HladkĂ˝ (Goalkeeper – Salford City)

The Czech has 21 clean sheets in 45 starts this season (the second highest in the division) and 2.7 key saves per game, at a save percentage of 78%, picking up two team of the week awards along the way. He also averages 0.4 successful run outs per game at an average of 89%.

Kyle Knoyle (Defender – Cambridge United)

Knoyle has helped his side to 12 clean sheets in 45 starts this season and has started every minute for 2nd place Cambridge who look to clinch automatic promotion this season. Knoyle has chipped in with 8 goals contributions this season from defence and has averaged a successful pass accuracy of 66% (22.9 passes per game). He also averages 2.3 clearances per game.

Will Boyle (Defender – Cheltenham Town)

Boyle has helped oversee 13 clean sheets in 29 league starts this season, averaging 3.2 clearances per game and has even chipped in with goal contributions. The Englishman also averages 6.3 successful aerial duals a game and boasts a passing accuracy of 67% with 32.2 passes per game.

Jordan Tunnicliffe (Defender – Crawley Town)

Tunnicliffe has started 38 times for the Red Devils this season in which time he has helped his team to 13 clean sheets. The 27 year old has three goals to his name this season as well as an average of 5.1 clearances per game and an impressive 75% of total duals won, averaging 10.1 per game.

Ibou Touray (Defender – Salford City)

The Gambian has 45 appearances for Salford this season, in which he has a staggering 20 clean sheets to accommodate that with. The former Everton academy player has 5 goal contributions as well as a successful ground duals won rate of 56% with 6.6 per game.

David Worrall (Midfielder – Port Vale)

The man who claims he has made a career out of “running around” has 10 assists in 36 appearances this season, the second highest in the division and has also chipped in with five goals along the way. Worrall has been included in the team of the week four times this season.

Wes Hoolahan (Midfielder – Cambridge United)

The ex-Premier League midfielder has still got it, having chipped in with 15 goal contributions in 33 appearances this season. The Irish man has created 18 big chances this season and hails some of the best passing accuracy in the division with 35.1 accurate passes per game (at an average of 76%). He has picked up seven team of the week awards throughout.

Antoni Sarcevic (Midfielder – Bolton Wanderers)

The League 2 promotion expert has 10 goal contributions in 31 appearances this season and has been a rock in midfield for Bolton this season as they look to gain promotion back to League One. The 29 year old averages 26.3 accurate passes per game (70%) and has created six big chances this season.

Chris Hussey (Midfeilder – Cheltenham Town)

Hussey’s brilliant free kick against Carlisle last week was influential towards Cheltenham’s promotion and the 32 year old has made 42 appearances for Michael Duff’s men this season. Hussey has averaged 28.8 accurate passes per game (74%), making the team of the week twice throughout the campaign.

Matt Jay (Forward – Exeter City)

Having come through an academy that just keeps producing at Exeter, Matt Jay has been ruthless in front of goal this season with 17 goals and 7 assists in 43 appearances this season. He made the Team of the week seven times throughout the season.

Paul Mullin (Forward – Cambridge Utd)

League Two’s top scorer this season with 31 goals in 45 appearances, Mullin has more than earned his place in this side and is a large part of the reason for Cambridge’s success this season. Having also chipped in four assists, Mullin has more goal contributions than any other player in the division this season by far, making the team of the week eight times along the way this season.
