STUDENT UNION WORLD CUP BREAKDOWN

ENGLAND MAKE IT 6-2 AGAINST IRAN! Is what every student wants to see as they look for a hotspot to sit, watch and enjoy the worldwide event for yesterday’s England match. The student union have decided against showing it after being seen at the university World Cup debate which is said to be a contributing factor to it not being shown at the university.

The student union has hosted a variety of events over the years that have been very popular from events like MT Fight Night that raised £1,350 for charity, to Tash Bash which was also very popular. Many students are said to be distressed at this as there is a lot of interest in this tournament, and a lot of students want to see England do well in the tournament.

Main reasons for it not being shown cited include abuse of human rights (specifically LQBTQ+), prioritisation of economic gain over social justice and abuse of workers rights. The union have left it up to students on whether they want to watch the tournament but have made it publicly clear that they do not want to glorify this world cup or even show it due to the negative connotations that come with it.

This is a surprise to students and very much an unpopular one with students on park campus mostly not happy. 10 students were asked whether they would watch the world cup on park campus and 8 said they would. Three sports journalist students voiced their opinions with one being adamant the tournament should be shown on campus in anger with the Student Union’s decision saying ‘for god’s sake just show it’ when we revealed that it wouldn’t be shown, as well as the other two stating that the world cup is being broadcast for free on BBC and ITV, why can’t it be shown?
