Should Christmas Bonus be Increased?

Every year, people claiming Universal Credit receive a Christmas Bonus, worth £10. However, with the rising cost-of-living crisis, should this payment be increased?

The increases in the costs of consumer goods, underpinned by strong demand from consumers and supply chain bottlenecks, have been factors causing rising inflation, which almost makes the £10 payment seem redundant.

Approximately 5 million people are on Universal Credit in the UK for one reason or another, and the Government have already handed out a one-off payment earlier this Spring. Despite that earlier payment within the last year, some people in Gloucestershire think that this bonus should be increased. People all over Gloucestershire have been voicing their concerns. “£10 is simply not enough; this would barely benefit the people who need it and the government have to be aware of that.”

Some people have taken to social media to express their displeasure on the universal credits advance. With many saying that everyone struggles, whether you’re employed or unemployed. Should the employed also receive larger credits. One person said, “The government should take this opportunity to reward workers for their hard work over the year, especially during the cost-of-living crisis. This would send a message of more unity between the government and its country.” During a time of crisis within this country, it can be said many people would agree. Some say the country and its government seem further apart than ever and a larger reward to its people could heal some of the damage and be step in the right direction.
