Seventh heaven for Stourbridge in Black Country derby as they beat rivals West Brom Women

Stourbridge triumphed 7-2 in an action-filled affair against local rivals, West Bromwich Albion Women at the War Memorial Ground in front of a record crowd of 410.

The game was a tightly fought contest for the first 75 minutes of the game until Stourbridge scored a late flurry of goals on a landmark evening for the club.

It was a disappointing evening for West Brom as they failed to ever truly grasp the game, especially in midfield, and as the game got more scrappy and open late on, Stourbridge capitalised.

The Baggies got off to a fast start and took the lead through captain, Hannah George’s fourth goal of the season as she steered Hayley Crackle’s deep free-kick into the net.

On the half-hour mark West Brom and England under-19s goalkeeper Lucy Jones was robbed of possession inside her own six-yard box and Ellie Butler was on hand to tap home the equaliser for Stourbridge.

Five minutes later another calamitous mistake at the back by West Brom made way for Niamh Deasy to fire the Glassgirls ahead.

Deasy added her second of the game seven minutes into the second half, stabbing the ball into the top corner of Jones’ net, sending the home support into raptures.

Only minutes later, West Brom fired back, and once again the chance came from a Crackle freekick, this time it was her centre-back partner Isabel Green who met the delivery and got the Baggies back in the game.

After fifteen tight minutes, Stourbridge had to call on Jamie-Lee Bamford to make two impressive back to back saves in to keep West Brom from equalizing late on.

Firstly, from Crackle’s fierce shot from thirty yards out, and then again from the ensuing corner, Fran Orthodoxou’s shot was turned around the post by Bamford.

Bamford’s intervention proved to be important as Stourbridge managed to go up the other end and double their advantage through Seanna Robinson after a goalmouth scrap from a free kick.

After that, the wind was blown from the Baggies’ sails and Stourbridge had full momentum in front of their home support adding a fifth following another melee in the box after a set piece, with Hannah Fishwick there to stab home.

The home-side completed their rout adding two more goals in the 90th and 93rd minute, as Jade Grove and Zoe Clarke both added their names to the scoresheet.
