“Second half he came out firing” Cheltenham Town fans react to Will Goodwin’s debut

Cheltenham Town fans were pleased with the performance of new signing Will Goodwin during their 3-1 win against Salford in the Papa-Johns Trophy quarter-finals.

The striker, who only joined the club from Stoke 24 hours earlier having scored eight goals for Torquay in the first half of the season, scored his sides third, whilst playing a key role in the second as well.

Cheltenham fell behind in the match when Callum Hendry volleyed in a rebound after a good close range save from Luke Southwood.

The Robins keeper was fortunate to stay on the pitch soon after, with Luke Bolton rounding him, before he took the Salford wing-back out with an empty net in front of him.

Referee Carl Brook opted for yellow much to the fury of The Ammies coaches. And they would’ve been more frustrated when Southwood made a good save from Kevin Berkoe.

Cheltenham equalised on the stroke of half time, when Ryan Broom swept home from a Ben Williams pull back to leave it all to play for in the second half.

The Robins came out the blocks quickly in the second half, with a few chances for Goodwin and Alfie May.

They took a deserved lead in the 65th minute when Sercombe was on hand to convert a rebound after Goodwin hit the post.

Goodwin finally got on the scoresheet a minute later when he thrashed the ball in after Sercombe returned the favour.

That ended the scoring as Cheltenham ended up winning with comfort after a tough first half an hour.

Cheltenham move into the semi-finals and are now just one game away from Wembley should they get past one of Bolton, Accrington or Plymouth

But that will feel less important currently, as Wade Elliott has seemingly replaced Dan N’Lundulu already, after the Southampton striker left to join Bolton

Cheltenham fan Jesse Curran was left impressed by the 20-year-old on his debut: ” I think he had quite a slow start, but in the second half he came out firing, like the rest of the team, and he definitely looks like he could be the solution up top.”

“Dan was a good player, but he needed to move on and Will has the talent to potentially take the pressure off of Alfie May.”

Jesse was also excited about Cheltenham’s chances in the competition, with two televised games available should they get to the final.

“I back this team for sure, I think they came back second half with a really good attitude and that could take them all the way.”

“There won’t be an easy game left now, but we have had close games with all three this season so hopefully we can beat whoever we get and make it to Wembley.”
