Reasons why Gloucestershire fans should be optimistic ahead of the 2022 cricket season

The Gloucestershire County Cricket team, were impressive in their 2021 campaign, after being introduced to the newly structure county Championship.

The Gloucester-based Cricketer’s finished third in their group including a superb eight wicket win over local rivals Somerset, finishing above both Surrey and Middlesex.

The Gladiators excelled in three games out of four in the second stage of the competition which enabled them to finish second in their group.

The young rising stars Tom and Ollie Price continued to prove themselves and it seems they both have a bright future at the club.

Gloucester’s white ball campaign was also a huge success, like many counties they were hampered by call ups from the new Hundred competition, losing various senior players.

However, the young players seemed to step up as they reached the quarter finals of the One Day Cup.

Unfortunately, the team was defeated by Surrey and standards didn’t improve as the side missed out on the T20 blast quarter finals by one point.

Looking ahead to the upcoming season, Gloucester have already made a couple of very impressive overseas signings bringing in Australian opening batsman Marcus Harris who will join the club in April.

Harris has struggled in the Test arena so far in his career, averaging just 25 in his 14 games.

However, the 29-year-old has an respectable first-class average of 40, with his test pedigree he will be a welcomed addition to Gloucester’s top order.

Naseem Shah will also joins the club until the end of the T20 blast group stage campaign.

The 18-year-old has huge potential, he was the second youngest player to ever take a five-wicket haul in a test match when he took five for 31 against Sri Lanka in 2019.

The club has also signed Zafar Gofar, another Pakistan international with an excellent first-class record.

In terms of domestic signings, the club have signed young bowler Ajeet Dale from Hampshire along with the experienced Paul Van Meekeren who will become Gloucester’s first ever Dutch player.

The club has also appointed a new head coach named Dale Benkenstein who has signed a three-year contract which replaced Ian Harvey – who was appointed on a interim basis last season.
