PREVIEW: UOGWH’s Alicia Turner looks ahead to this weekend’s Varsity clash

University of Gloucestershire Women’s hockey team are currently underway in preparation for the big derby against Worcester University this Saturday.

The women have had an up and down season after being promoted last season into BUCS League South B. Times have been challenging but playing against top universities such as Exeter and Oxford Brookes have improved the performance of the team as well as fitness levels and overall intensity of play.

UOGWH managed to secure the win last year’s Varsity on nail-biting penalties, are looking to create more chances in game time this time round.

We spoke to second year forward Alicia Turner on her thoughts on the upcoming match.

“Our training has been really intense these past few weeks. We’ve had 4 training sessions each week including work in the gym, strength and conditioning as well as on the pitch itself.

We should be confident and have faith in our team, Worcester are in a lower league in BUCS so hopefully it should be a win but you never know what can happen on Varsity day.”

The club as a whole have loyal supporters who have been at every home game during the season and are hoping for many more this weekend.

Turner says, “A home crowd does help us, some of the girls get a bit nervous some of us thrive off it. For me every hockey game I play I enjoy the energy, especially at Varsity. I don’t like to think about it too much and if I do I end up getting my knickers in a twist.”
