Olivier Giroud becomes French all-time leading goal scorer

The France national team have had some incredibly gifted players over the years with the likes of Zinedine Zidane and Thierry Henry just a small few to have pulled on the famous Les Bleus shirt, but none of them have scored more goals for their country than Olivier Giroud.

The record-breaking moment for Giroud would come on one of the biggest stages in football, the World Cup, more specifically in a 3-1 victory over Poland in the round of 16.

Giroud, who made his international debut back in November 2011 aged 25 at the time, following an impressive campaign domestically with Montpellier described it as a “a childhood dream come true” when he would come on as a substitute in a friendly against the United States.

Giroud’s first goal for the national team would come against fierce opponents in the Germans, in a 2-1 victory albeit a friendly back in February 2012.

The previous record was held by none other than former Arsenal FC legend Thierry Henry who’s 51 goals in 123 caps a record he held for 15 years.

Giroud’s importance to the French national team has become more and more as he has gotten older becoming the main goal scorer for the national team, since 2011 Giroud has notched up an impressive 117 caps, making him fourth in the all-time appearance chart for the national team, four caps behind Thierry Henry in third.

It is this World Cup in Qatar, in which Giroud has flourished scoring three goals in three games putting him in joint second in the race for the golden boot, with fellow countryman and boy wonder Kylian Mbappe leading the race with five goals. Giroud was part of the French team that won the competition back in 2018 for the second time.
