Nearly a generation ago, porn was a taboo subject that no one wanted to talk about. Now, we’re getting 5 mums to have a crack at producing an adult film for themselves. The 3 part channel 4 series, ended on Wednesday and it changed my views on porn completely.
The premise of the show was to get 5 mums together to research and watch porn. They learnt how easy it is to access; especially with the mums having 15 children between them. After just two clicks they came across hard core free porn.
Just 5 minutes into the episode, they were in disbelief. One of the mums, Sarah Louise, said “If my son ever treated a girl like that, I would kick his arse to kingdom-come”.
Over the 3 episodes, the mums challenge was to create, shoot and direct their own porn film. During this, they got to go and watch some porn productions, meet up with the film stars and do some work experience with Erika Lust, a famous adult filmmaker who makes ‘ethical’ porn.
It was unclear to me, what kind of porn the mums wanted to create. They all said they were unsatisfied with the amount of violent sex there was out there, but didn’t want to make ‘frumpy mum porn’. With each of the mums wanting different elements involved, to me, they all got a little lost along the way. One mum, Jane, dropped out during the second episode, as she was unhappy with the way the film was going.
One shocking moment that made everyone’s stomachs drop was when 3 of the mums went to watch their first adult film being made. Unfortunately for Sarah Louise, it was too much to stomach… literally.
Tonight at 10pm #MumsMakePorn concludes, as the mums host a screening of their very own porn film for an audience of friends, family, and industry experts. pic.twitter.com/iAC68nWkvD

When it came to the final production of their film, they did have to rope in some professional help, but on the whole, they directed and produced most of the film alone. They created a same sex couple sex scene which faded in and out of a man and woman sex scene. They wanted to present sex as safe and consensual, showing the use of condoms, lube and sex toys.
The film was then shown to an audience of professional film makers, actors and the mums friends and family. Erika Lust enjoyed it so much she even agreed to help the mums get their film out into the industry of porn.
This series opened up my eyes to what the porn industry is and can be. There is a gap in the market for these kind of ‘ethical films’, but are they really want people want to watch? Overall, it covered some sensitive issues and called out a lot of porn for being violent and male dominated. Sex is a conversation that people should be discussing, especially with children having such easy access to porn. I think this show was entertaining, informative and something everyone should give a watch.
The mums may have been conflicted throughout the show, but in the end created a work of art that might just break the stereotype of porn.
4 out of 5 stars
If you’re watching #MumsMakePorn and wondering what the finished film looks like, here you are: https://t.co/PgI7dR3NLL. It’s actual porn with actual sex, so you’ll have to verify that you’re over 18 to watch, because we’re responsible.
