Marcus Rashford – Manchester United striker to be awarded special award by the BBC

Marcus Rashford will be honoured at BBC Sports Personality of the Year in December as a result of him raising awareness for child poverty in the UK

Director of BBC Sport, Barbara Slater has spoken about Rashford saying, “In a year that has been challenging for everyone, but particularly vulnerable families, he has gone above and beyond to transcend his sport and make a real difference. This award is a tribute to a remarkable young man.”

Rashford has not been nominated for the main award, but because of his off the field actions he will be given a special award which was agreed by the shows judging panel.

As well as this, Rashford has been added to the Football Black List which acknowledges black footballers who have had a positive influence both on and off the pitch. A documentary is also being made which will look at all the things Rashford has achieved off the pitch. The documentary will be shown on the 21st December on BBC One. Rashford’s efforts have already seen him be awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours and this is further recognition of his selfless acts off the pitch.

Rashford’s free school meal campaign helped around 1.3 million children in some off the poorest areas in the UK. Rashford also started a campaign which saw the government spend £400 million to support poor families. Rashford has also launched a book club in order that children can enjoy reading and enhance their education.

Rashford has described his own experiences as a child, saying that as a child he often went without food and his family had to make sacrifices in order to eat.

Sports Personality is on 20th December with the documentary on Rashford coming out a day later on the 21st.
