Burnley ended Liverpool’s incredible 68 game streak without losing at home courtesy of a late penalty from Ashley Barnes.
The Reds’ last loss at home came in 2017 when goals from former Liverpool man Christian Benteke gave Crystal Palace a 2-1 win.
Liverpool had their chances but they were punished seven minutes from time when Barnes was taken out in the box by Liverpool keeper Allison.
The Burnley forward then stepped up and dispatched of the spot-kick emphatically to give Burnley their second away victory of the season.
Jurgen Klopp did make some unexpected changes to his starting XI after the goalless draw with Manchester United, leaving out Mohammed Salah and Roberto Firmino to bring in Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Divock Origi.
While Sean Dyche recalled Charlie Taylor and Dwight McNeil in place of Erik Pieters and Johann Berg Gudmundsson after his side’s narrow 1-0 defeat against West Ham.
Burnley certainly started the better of the two teams going forward and the aerial presence of Chris Wood and Ashley Barnes caused the returning Joel Matip and Fabinho some problems.
Most notably coming when Robbie Brady’s lofted cross was lost by Allison and Barnes reacted quickly but the offside flag was up against the Burnley striker.
Liverpool did grow into the game though and on 20 minutes Xherdan Shaqiri tested the water, firing just wide from the edge of the box.
The full-backs then began getting more involved with Trent Alexander Arnold blazing over a few times from distance and Andy Robertson stinging the hands of Nick Pope.
But undoubtedly the best chance of the half fell to Divock Origi, the Belgian forward capitalised on a rare mistake from Ben Mee and began baring down on goal, but could only launch his effort off the crossbar.
After just five minutes of the second 45, Taylor was replaced by Erik Pieters after landing awkwardly on his ankle and it was down Burnley’s left-hand side where Liverpool threatened again.
This time Alexander-Arnold forced Pope into a diving save and with Mane coming in on the rebound, the 28-year-old did very well to kick the ball away from danger.
Klopp, clearly fearing the worst, introduced Firmino and Salah onto the pitch, and the Egyptian forward very nearly made an immediate impact.
Following Georginio Wijnaldum’s 40-yard drive up the pitch, Salah was teed up wonderfully by the Dutchman but his fierce near post effort was saved superbly by Pope, on his 100th Burnley appearance.
Burnley then very nearly took a shock lead, Matthew Lowton delivered a picture-perfect ball into Barnes who’s volleyed strike was saved fantastically by Allison, but the assistants flag did eventually go up.
Liverpool continued the pressure but were amazingly caught out by the visitors when Barnes beat Allison to the ball and won his side a penalty, which he then blasted in.
Klopp’s men pressed for a goal and went close with Firmino but Ben Mee made a valiant block and his team held out for the remaining minutes to earn a record-breaking win which affects the Premier League table at both ends.
