Late call on Alfie May’s fitness ahead of Cheltenham Town vs Bolton Wanderers

Wade Elliott doesn’t want to speculate on the fitness of Alfie May, as the forward undergoes a scan today ahead of Cheltenham Town’s clash with Bolton Wanderers.

The 29-year-old scored his third league goal of the season in the Robins’ 2-0 win over Shrewsbury Town on Saturday, but was stretchered off in the 89th minute after sustaining a knock to his ankle.

His participation in Tuesday night’s home fixture against play-off chasing Bolton is therefore in doubt.

Cheltenham boss Wade Elliott told reporters in his pre-match press conference that the club will find out more about the injury either later tonight, or tomorrow morning.

“It depends how quickly we can get the results back,” said Elliott.

“The scan is to assess what’s under a little bit of swelling that’s there at the moment.

“I wouldn’t like to speculate on what it is or it isn’t, and I’m not qualified or in a position to do that.”

Elliott had been impressed with May’s performance at the weekend, after dropping him to bench against both Cambridge United and Accrington Stanley.

Alfie May scored Cheltenham Town’s second goal in their 2-0 win over Shrewsbury Town on Saturday, October 1.

“I thought he was really bright [against Shrewsbury], and what I said to him afterwards is what typified his performance for me was early on when he’s nicked the ball off [Tom] Flanagan’s toe.

“When you have an image of Alfie, that’s him. He’s buzzing around, he’s sharp and you saw that in his performance and in his goal.

“It was good awareness and he was half a second ahead of other people on the pitch. Great run, great finish.”

If May is to be absent, Elliott will have a tough decision to make on who to partner Daniel Nlundulu up front on Tuesday night.

George Lloyd started in May’s place against Cambridge and Accrington, but is yet to score this season.

Other candidates to start include August arrival Christian Norton and Charlie Brown, who has scored significant goals against MK Dons and Port Vale.

The Robins are currently 17th in SkyBet EFL League One, and take on fifth-placed Bolton at the Completely-Suzuki Stadium on Tuesday, October 4 (7:45pm).
