Forest Green loanee Josh Davison says it’s “a huge relief” to score his first goal for the club in Tuesday’s 4-3 victory over Oldham Athletic.
The 21-year-old, who joined on-loan from Charlton Athletic in January, scored the winner in an enthralling seven-goal thriller.
His nervous wait for a goal was prolonged after games against Mansfield Town and Barrow respectively were postponed due to poor weather conditions. Davison now hopes to “push on” and continue his impressive start at the New Lawn.
“I was upset with myself after the game against Carlisle because I wanted to score on my first game,” Davison revealed.
He added: “Every striker wants to hit the ground running and you just want to get back out there and score goals when the games keep getting called off. That’s the main thing a striker wants to do so to get that goal was a huge relief and I’m now ready to push on hopefully.”
Davison faces stern competition in the shape of Aaron Collins and former Newport County striker Jamille Matt who is their leading scorer with 10 goals.
But Davison embraces the competition for places and believes the Rovers can combat the poor playing surface at Newport on Saturday.
“When I first came in, it’s all about earning your place in the team,” he said. “Everyone knows the quality that we have up top is very good so I’ve just got to keep the shirt.
“If we need to rotate because I’m tired or Jamille is tired then everyone is willing to buy into what we’re trying to do.”
“We focus on ourselves more than anything. If we’re on it then we back ourselves. Sometimes you’re going to have games where the pitch doesn’t allow you to play or wind conditions can change the way a game is played.
“The team is more than prepared to deal with anything that comes our way and we’re ready to play either way to get the win.”
