Is Wes Streeting going to challenge for PM?

It has been a difficult week for Sir Keir Starmer.

After a hard loss in the local elections, he has been under scrutiny from the general public, other Labour party MPs, and also, members of his own government. 90 Labour MPs have called for him to step down.

Wes Streeting, the Secretary for Health and Social Care, currently seems to be the favourite in the running to replace Sir Keir Starmer. He is not the only potential name that has been thrown around.

He took part in a 17-minute meeting with the Prime Minister yesterday, leaving more questions than answers.

It has now been announced that Angela Rayner, former Deputy Prime Minister, has now been cleared of wrongdoing by HMRC. This now allows her to take part in the run for the leadership.

Other names in the mix include the Mayor of Manchester Andy Burnham, who cannot officially run until he has a seat in Parliament. Ed Miliband, who ran against former PM David Cameron, and Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood who was one of the first to call for another Labour leader.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves believes that conducting a leadership contest would ‘plunge us into chaos’.

It is expected Wes Streeting is going to make a challenge later on today. It is currently uncertain whether or not he has the backing of a minimum of 81 Labour MPs.
