I want to congratulate the man who first decided to put a meat patty in-between two pieces of bread because it spawned a love for one of my favourite foods. The burger. Burgers are often seen as greasy, fatty and quite a basic food. However, the newest restaurant to open up in Cheltenham is set to wipe this rumour with fresh, well cooked and flavoursome grub.
Holee Cow opened towards the end of 2017 and I was one of the first to go. The place is quirky, there’s no signage inside the building and there’s a very industrial atmosphere with high exposed ceiling and lots of metal. This seems to be the trend at the moment with styling and while it could be better, it’s not the worst thing I’ve seen.
What makes this place different is the fact it is pure table service, no takeaway available. While it is nice to sit down and relax this does mean that you’re paying restaurant prices, burgers range from £7-9 with sides around £5. I thought the speed and quality of service could have been better, but I can’t criticise too much as it was very early days when I went. My criticisms were mostly down to inexperienced staff and with time this should improve massively as everyone was friendly and smiley.
I had the “Lamburghini” which was lamb, goats cheese, red cabbage and unusually cucumber spaghetti. I also got the Buffalo Wings s a side. The lamb meat itself was great, it was tender but still juicy, the cucumber spaghetti gave an unusual crunch but I think it worked here while the sweetness of the cabbage complimented the goats cheese nicely too. The down point was the bun, it seemed a bit soggy and oily for my liking, I feel if they had used a crusty sourdough roll toasted for a couple minutes it would have made a much better addition. The wings themselves were good too, they were sweeter and richer than I expected and tasted more kimchi than buffalo, nonetheless they were spicy and tasty!
Overall I can’t really see a reason not to go here! while it is expensive for a burger place it’s what you’d pay in a restaurant so I can’t complain massively. All my other criticisms will most likely be solved over the next couple of months. If you’re looking for somewhere a bit cheaper and where you’re able to take your food away, I’d go for Real Burger, which is another burger place in Cheltenham. I’m still torn between the two and will be for some time!
