The leader of a life saving community group who keep people safe at night has been nominated for a top award.
Cheltenham Guardians CERT founder Terry Howard has been shortlisted as one of two semi-finalists in The Breeze Charity Champion Award. The event is sponsored by Volunteering Gloucestershire and recognises local heroes for their work within the community.
The Cheltenham Guardians was founded by Howard with the aim of helping young people in the town at night, providing “aid, assistance and welfare services” for those who need it. In a typical night, the Guardians can be seen helping with anything from A&E trips to performing CPR to simply paying for a taxi, and Terry’s commitment hasn’t gone unnoticed.
Fellow volunteer Tara Rowe nominated Howard for the award, saying;
“Without Terry, there would be no organisation at all. He set it up himself and the majority of the funding comes out of his own pocket. He is out every single Saturday night protecting the people of Cheltenham.
I really could go on for hours about how wonderful this man is. I have never met someone who cares more about the welfare of young people. His heart is one of the biggest I’ve ever known. I would nominate him a million times over if I could.”
It’s clear that Tara’s view of Terry is shared by others in the community:
