Gloucester Library Planned Move to Ex-Debenhams Site

The University of Gloucestershire and Gloucestershire County Council are working together to move its biggest library from Brunswick Road to the old Debenhams in Kings Square.

The new location for the library is not only modern and accessible, it is in a new university building which will allow for a greater partnership between the library and the University. Approximately a 7 minute walk away from the Kings Square, the current library is situated in a Victorian building, which can bring up issues in planning and accessibility.

Gloucester County Council have published a survey asking people to voice their opinions on the relocation of the library. Councillor Dave Norman has addressed the public, urging them to voice any concerns.

“By linking up with the University of Gloucestershire and moving Gloucester Library to the centre of the city, we will greatly improve our facilities, our appeal to users and support the economy by relocating our innovation lab. We really want to hear what you think of these exciting plans, so please let us know by taking part in the survey.”

The planned move has faced some criticism online with one user on Gloucestershire Live’s page saying: “Typical short term thinking. Sell off a property you own for a quick buck then rent a property instead. Then at a later date when you can’t afford it the library closes.”
