From Gloucestershire to Qatar… The ex-Forest Green Rovers and Cheltenham Town players who are set to travel to the 2022 World Cup

With just three squads yet to be announced ahead of the 2022 World Cup, Park Life Sport look at some former Gloucestershire alumni who will be travelling out to Qatar for the tournament.

The tournament is set to kick off in just under a week, with the opening game between Qatar and Ecuador taking place on Sunday.

Robert Sánchez

Sánchez has had a meteoric rise from his time in Nailsworth while on loan at Forest Green Rovers.

The goalkeeper, who appeared 19 times for the club, would go on to establish himself as first-choice ‘keeper at Brighton and Hove Albion.

Since being handed a starting berth at the club in 2020, Sánchez has appeared on 78 occasions in the Premier League, with his performances earning a maiden Spain call-up for Euro 2020.

He would make his international debut against Georgia, being brought on for Unai Simón in a 4-0 win in September 2021.

Kieffer Moore

Moore has gone from plying his trade in Nailsworth to the heights of international football and the Premier League.

The 28-cap Wales international has been one of the Dragons’ key players since his debut in 2019, with Moore netting on nine occasions and a key part of the Euro 2020 side that reached the knockout stages.

The forward will be hoping to capitalise on his recent form for Bournemouth out in Qatar, having netted three goals in his last three matches for the Cherries.

Joe Rodon

Rodon is the second of three Wales internationals on this list, with the on-loan Rennes defender having experienced a short stint at Cheltenham Town in January 2018.

Making 12 appearances for the club, Rodon would go back to his parent club Swansea before making the move to Tottenham Hotspur after a string of impressive performances under Steve Cooper.

Rodon has become a mainstay under Rob Page for Wales, with the defender expected to play a key role in the tournament later this month.

Joe Morrell

Another ex-Cheltenham Town loanee, Morrell’s stint at Whaddon Road during the 2017/18 season was his first full season in the EFL.

The midfielder would score three times for the Robins, going on to play for Lincoln City and Luton Town before making the move to Portsmouth in the summer.

Following his debut for Wales in 2019, Morrell has appeared at Euro 2020 and registered 30 caps to date.

Jojo Wollacott (Honourable Mention)

Wollacott unfortunately wasn’t included in the travelling Ghana squad after sustaining an injury during the warm-up at Burton Albion this weekend.

Having established himself as the number one keeper for the Black Stars in recent times, Wollacott would’ve surely been included in the squad, and expected to play a key role for the side has he been fit.

The current Charlton Athletic stopper had previously had stints with both Gloucester City and Forest Green Rovers in the 2018/19 and 2019/20 seasons respectively.
