Gloucestershire football round-up: goals galore and much more

It was yet another busy weekend of football across the country, with our Gloucestershire teams looking to really kick on into the season.

Beginning in League One, Cheltenham Town failed to make it three wins in a row as they lost 3-0 away at Sheffield Wednesday.

Sheffield’s Josh Windass opened the scoring for his side, firing home a free-kick from 30 yards out.

Two more late goals from Barry Bannan and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru secured Sheffield’s eighth league win of the season.

Currently sitting third, they’re looking like early contenders for the play-offs.

As for Cheltenham, they’ll be unhappy with their start to the season as they sit 17th in the league.

However, as they adapt to life without former manager Michael Duff, they’ll be hoping to build some momentum as the season progresses.

Elsewhere in League One, Forest Green Rovers earned their third league win of the season, edging out a 1-0 win over Bolton Wanderers.

Former Sunderland striker Conor Wickham swept home his fifth goal of the season just past the half hour mark following a cross from Corey O’Keefe.

With Bolton currently sitting sixth in League One, this was an impressive result for The Green who have struggled since winning promotion last season.

Moving over now to the National League North, where Gloucester City came from two goals down to earn themselves a thrilling 3-2 victory.

Trailing at 2-0 just ten minutes in, it wasn’t looking good for the Tigers.

However, a goal from Matt McClure just before half-time gave Gloucester some hope.

A late brace from Kieran Philips completed a remarkable turnaround, earning his side their fifth league win of the season.

Finally, there was yet another thrilling encounter in Gloucestershire as Brimscombe and Thrupp FC beat Royal Wooten Basset Town 3-2.

Goals from Liam Harper, Oliver Barnes and Samuel Folkes gave Brimscombe just their second league win of the season.
