Marcus Bignot has left his role as assistant manager at Swindon Town following the Robins ninth place finish in SkyBet League two.
Bignot joined Town in June 2024 as a part of head coach Mark Kennedy’s staff, and while Kennedy was dismissed six months later, he stayed and worked under Ian Holloway, helping them stay up last season, and mount a play-off push in the latest campaign.
Upon his exit, Holloway praised the 51-year old, thanking him for his professionalism while working together.
“Marcus has been a real positive influence since the moment I walked through the door. His energy, professionalism and commitment to the players has been first class, and he leaves with nothing but our respect and gratitude.”
Bignot joined Cheltenham Town in June 2022 as a part of Wade Elliott’s back room staff. The Robins finished 16th in League one that year, with Alfie May getting 20-goals in the campaign.
His move to Cheltenham was met with controversy. His tenure at Birmingham City Women was ended having been found to have used abusive language, regarding “sexual orientation”. Subsequently he was handed a seven-match touchline ban.
The Gloucestershire side said they took “due-diligence” before making the appointment, by talking to representatives from the Robins trust, Proud Robins LGBTQ+ supporters, Football Supporters Association, League Managers Association and Cheltenham Ladies football club.
He left the Robins a year later, to take on the role of assistant head coach at Shrewsbury Town.
During his playing career, he made over 600-appearances, including spells at QPR, Millwall, Bristol City and Oldham, before retiring in 2016.
