GOSSIP: Forest Green tried to sign ex-Cheltenham star Billy Waters

Forest Green could have signed ex-Cheltenham forward Billy Waters in the summer, manager Mark Cooper has revealed. Waters, who visits The New Lawn this week with Cambridge was a surprise target for the League 2 side, as they prepared their squad for their first season of league football.

Waters ultimately joined Northampton in League One from Cheltenham in the summer for an undisclosed fee. The 23-year-old was Cheltenham’s top scorer last season with 16 goals and picked up numerous accolades at the club’s end of season awards.

Less than a year later Waters finds himself back on loan in League Two with Shaun Derry’s Cambridge but it could have been different for the Cheltenham fan favourite as Forest Green manager Cooper reveals.

“He is somebody that we quite liked, but obviously Northampton were League One. It’s not quite happened for him there but he is a good players and gives them (Cambridge) a good blend of big men and small men up top.”

Forest Green have been active in the January Transfer window so far bringing in striker Reuben Reid on a 2-and-a-half year deal but Cooper certainly feels that the ex-Cheltenham star is one that got away.
