Explained: why were UK cars covered in dust this morning

Drivers across the UK may have been confused this morning (Friday, March 6) as cars across the region were coated in a layer of dust.

Car owners will be relieved to know this is a surprisingly common occurrence in the UK called Saharan dust. The phenomenon is due to high winds over the Sahara Desert whipping dust and sand into the air before it is carried north, eventually reaching the UK.

Along the way, dust will mix with the UK’s rainfall resulting in the layer that covers cars, garden furniture and windows.

The Met Office said: “The sky is likely to be hazier due to some dust from the Saharan desert that has been wafted over us and this may bring us more atmospheric or orangey sunsets.”

Many commenters on Facebook reported taking their cars to the jet wash because of the effects of the dust whilst others had to wash their windows that were covered in the dust.

The forecast is due to be overcast in Gloucester for the rest of the day, with highs of 9C this afternoon.
