Cirencester Town reach GFA Senior Challenge Cup final after 4-0 win over Slimbridge

Cirencester Town have made it to the final of the GFA Senior Challenge Cup after an impressive 4-0 win over Slimbridge at Wisloe Road.

Goals from Nick Peare, Ben Whitehead and a brace from Ross Gabriel ensured the Centurions made it to the final of the competition for the first time since the 2016/17 season.

Manager John Brough was delighted with the result as a much changed starting 11 got over the line with three late goals securing the win.

“It was really nice to get into a final, like it is with any final.

“It was a chance to play some of the guys who haven’t been featuring every week as we keep going on about how important the squad is.

“I think 4-0 was probably a harsh result on Slimbridge but the guys took their chances when they had the opportunities so that was pleasing.”

The current leaders of the Pitching In Southern League Division 1 South have had a fruitful season and a chance at even more silverware can only be a positive.

A tie against Yate Town in the final awaits the Centurions, a side in the league above Cirencester who are aiming to gain promotion and join them in the division next season.

Cirencester and Brough have had previous with the Bluebells and the gaffer had his say on the idea of promotion and the challenge of Yate, who gathered headlines in the FA Cup earlier this year.

“We’d love to be in there next year. We’ve got eight league games to go and we’re taking each game as it comes starting with Cinderford this weekend.

“They’re (Yate Town) where we want to be really. We played them in the league cup earlier this season and managed to beat them but they made a lot of changes on the night and so did we.

“Hopefully we can put on a good performance in the final and make it a good spectacle.”

Its back to the league this Saturday for Brough and his men as they travel to face lowly Cinderford at The Causeway Ground.

The Centurions hold a slender lead at the top of the league as things stand as we begin to enter the run in to the end of the season.

“It’s going to to be tricky. They’ve recruited over the last few weeks and brought some improved players in.

“They’re fighting for their lives, you know we played Barnstaple who are rock bottom last week and they gave us a real good game.

“I don’t expect anything different from Cinderford, especially at their place.”

Since relegation in the 2016/17 season, Cirencester haven’t returned to the Premier Division but have a real chance to in the coming months.

The 2014/15 GFA Senior Challenge Cup winners will be hoping they can add to a potential promotion by winning the trophy for a third time in their history.
