Cheltenham Town defender, Lewis Freestone: “We have to take advantage of every home game” in preparation of next game against Wigan Athletic

Lewis Freestone is hopeful that Cheltenham Town will move up in the league table and can win more games through the players “desires and willingness to do the right things”.

It has been a tough season for Cheltenham Town so far as they are currently 23rd in the Football League One table but are confident that they can earn three points against Wigan Athletic on Saturday.

“They’re obviously a big club, they have got some good individuals, some good players but so have we. We have been working all week on the game plan, so it is important that we stick to that that.

“It is at home, so we have that advantage, we have the fans, so it is crucial that we pick up our performance on Saturday” stated Freestone.

The Robins lost their last game against AFC Wimbledon in the FA Cup first round where they were battered 5-1. Despite a negative result for the club, the 24-year-old was aware that their performance was not at their best good but is however optimistic for an improvement in their next fixture against Wigan Athletic.

“It was not a good day for anyone. I think everyone that played or was there, underplayed and that’s not us. Nowhere near it. We know when we take our foot of the gas even in the slightest bit. We have been working hard this week, working on things, we need to turn that around and there is a good chance that we can do it tomorrow.

“I am sure most of the boys will go through it individually themselves at home, and then when we come back in, we’d watch it all collectively and pick a few things out and then you know, work on it at the training ground. I think a lot of it comes down to our own desires and willingness to do the right things. It is important that we stick to the stuff we work on in the week, because that is how we are going to win games.”

Cheltenham’s new manager, Darrell Clarke mentioned that he will be stripping down the club as he believes this is the solution to brining the club back to their fullest. However, Freestone treats this decision as form of motivation and sees it more of a positive rather than a negative.

“I think that is important. Competition is healthy, that is what brings the best out of everyone. We need that. We need each other to push each other every single day, and that’s important. It is a big group, and the boys know we need to perform to keep the shirts”.

Since joining Cheltenham in October, Clarke has earned the club more goals and has been nominated for ‘manager of the month’ and it is believed by all players that it is a well-deserved nomination.

The Cheltenham defender expressed, “It’s really good. We got a couple of important results since [Clarke] coming in. He boosted the morale of the boys, got around us, put his arm around our shoulders for a few people that might have needed it, given us that lift that we needed and hopefully we can continue that for him.”
