Cheltenham skier died on ski run

James Matthews, aged 24, was on “a trip of a lifetime” skiing down Whymper Couloir, Aiguille Verte in Chamonix when the accident occurred in April.

At Gloucester Coroner’s Court, it was heard that he had been there for 15 days before tackling the 4,122m French mountain.

A foreign climber who saw him beforehand warned Mr Matthews the snow was ‘not good’ before he carried on to do so.

An emergency helicopter was scrambled with a doctor and a first aider on board but James could not be saved.

The cause of death was due to many injuries including a skull fracture and haemorrhage.

There have been a number of incidents where climbers have been killed or gone missing in Aiguille Verte, even for experienced skiers and and climbers.
