Chelsea will face Manchester City in the Champions League final in Istanbul after comfortable getting past Real Madrid 2-0 (3-1 on aggregate) at Stamford Bridge
Thomas Tuchel’s men continued their impressive run in Europe with a solid performance against the 13-time European champions to set up a blockbuster all English final in Istanbul.
Timo Werner put the hosts in the 28th minute front with a header from goal line after fellow German Kai Havertz’ chip came off the bar. The goal put Chelsea 2-1 up on aggregate with an away goal under their belt.
The goal set the platform for the Blues. However, Zinedine Zidane’s men did ask their own questions at the end of the first half forcing two fine saves from Edouard Mendy.
Former Chelsea keeper Thibaut Courtois was Real Madrid’s starting keeper on the night and it was his efforts that kept the scoreline at just 1-0 for majority of the night as the blues kept applying pressure. N’golo Kante and Kai Havertz’ shots were saved by the Belgian, while Mason Mount’s effort went flying over the bar.
It was Mount, though, who finally sealed the tie in the 85th minute and all but confirmed Chelsea entering their first Champions League final since 2012.
“I’m very happy we’ve achieved this. I’m very grateful to have the opportunity to live my life in football and this passion as a profession. So grateful to do it on this level and to get to another final, I’m very grateful for that.” Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel after the game.
Chelsea will take on fellow Premier League side Manchester City in the final the 29th of May in Istanbul.
