Cheltenham Town face Barnsley at the Completely Suzuki stadium on Saturday, in an important fixture for many reasons, Not only can the Robins get back-to-back wins for the first time since October.
But just as significantly, it marks Michael Duffs return to the club he led to League one. Charlie Brown doesn’t see the why this game should be played any differently “it’s like any other game. We’re just going to approach it how we approach any other game. The main thing is the three points and winning the game. They’ve got the second tightest defence in League One, so they’re not going to be easy to break down.”
The striker knows his strengths and what he can do against the second-best defence in the league so far. “When you’re not a big man, it’s about just getting your body in and what we’re good at as a team especially in the midfield is winning second balls. So if we can’t win the first one it’s about putting a defender off as much as you can so they can’t get a clean header or a clean clearance and the midfield can pick up the second ball and then we’re already in their half and can play from there.”
Brown knows that Cheltenham can thrive when being the team that’s expected to drop points, “that’s the beauty of this league. Anything can be anything, no matter the size of the club or the budget. That underdog mentality helps. And like I said, especially at home, we’re really riled up. Hopefully put in a good performance and take something from the game.
When asked about coming back up against Duff, the manager that brought Brown to Cheltenham, he said “he told me it was all about this season for me after my injury last year, there’s a lot of people that have good relationship with him, first and foremost, they’re really good lads and are doing well.”
Cheltenham have a cup semi final coming up next week and can potentially take a trip to Wembley. “to get this close, everyone’s going to really, really want to win that game And like I start another gamer going versus a bigger club if you like, but we’ll go there definitely thinking I mean after there’s one more game to get to Wembley and we’ve been saying that from the group stages.”
The former Chelsea striker has only started 2 games in the league since his arrival and is eager for a third this weekend. “It’s what the gaffer said, he’s going to need every man in the squad, and I think that’s been proven, right? So, yeah, like you say when I get more starts, it’s just about taking them.”
