Antoine Griezmann signs for Atletico Madrid

Antoine Griezmann has signed for Atletico Madrid on a permanent basis in a deal until 2026.

The Frenchman joined Barcelona from Madrid after his €120 million release was activated back in 2019.

He enjoyed life in the Spanish capital scoring 94 goals in 180 games for Atletico, winning the Europa League, the Spanish Super Cup and the UEFA Super Cup, as well as a runner up in the Champions League.

Griezmann has been on loan from Barcelona for the last two seasons and has now made a return to the Colchoneros.

The deal is worth a reported €17.5 million, half of the €35 million that was part of the original deal.

In a bizarre clause agreed with Barcelona, Atletico would have had to pay the €35 million if Griezmann played 30 minutes or more in over half their matches.

This lead to the World Cup winner often getting subbed on with 29 minutes left of the game.

In a statement released today, Barcelona Chief Mateu Alemany said:

“We have renegotiated the conditions with Atletico Madrid this week and we will receive between 20 and 30 million euros, depending on the bonuses.

“It’s a massive, extraordinary deal for us because of Griezmann salary — and same for Coutinho.”
