AFC Kempsey and Montpellier tipped to run rampant in this season’s Cheltenham League

Cheltenham Association Football League expert Rob Morrison has predicted AFC Kempsey and Montpellier dominance in the current CAFL campaigns.

Morrison is the league website’s administrator whilst refereeing when he is called upon, as well as being the president of Cheltenham Civil Service

He also reports for Severn Sport, providing a roundup on a bi-weekly basis of the results from all three divisions.

Morrison says: “The website is busy during the summer where I’m setting up the configuring of the league to make sure the teams are in the right divisions, the links work to the various pictures, the team pages are current with the right contact details, then it’s more so dealing with updates.

“The writing for the post is the hardest thing as rather than just writing about a specific game, I’ve got to cover two weekends worth of action.”

For this season’s edition of the CAFL, there is a team in each division that stands out among the rest of the competition.

“Up until two weekends ago there were three teams, a team in each division that had a 100% record.

“In the Premier Division you’ve got AFC Kempsey, this is their first year in the top division, but in the previous two years they have won the Senior Charities Cup, which is the CAFL’s version of the FA Cup.

“The first year they won it, they were in the bottom division, so they’ve been a team that have been on the up, they’ve been promoted from their leagues the last two years and are now in the top division and still performing.”

AFC Kempsey are currently on 16 points after six games with an impressive goal difference of 22 already.

However, their dominance is not guaranteed, as there is one team that could pose a serious threat to Kempsey’s title challenge.

“They were held to a draw a couple of weeks ago, but I think they will be the yardstick, if somebody overcomes them, they will be the team to beat.

“Winchcombe Town have a similar record to them having just drawn one, it will be interesting to see if they can keep up and keep pace with them, the teams haven’t met yet, so they definitely have a chance.”

In the other divisions, there is a common theme at the top, with both Montpellier sides performing at the highest level.

“The two Montpellier teams have got a perfect start, and they will be the teams to beat.

“They both won their divisions last year, however because the league was reorganised, they remained where they were, so I think it is very difficult at this stage to look past Montpellier for making a clean sweep of the divisions.”

With both sides unbeaten so far, it seems almost certain that history will repeat itself and they will win the divisions without much difficulty, only time will tell if Morrison’s predictions are correct.
