Speed, style and supercars: Italian motoring celebrated at Prescott Hill

The sound of roaring engines echoed through the Cotswolds as Prescott Hill Climb circuit welcomed hundreds of Italian cars for one of its most glamorous events of the year.

Ferraris, Lamborghinis and Fiats filled the paddock and tackled the famous track, drawing crowds of spectators and motoring enthusiasts to the historic venue just outside Cheltenham.

The event celebrated the passion, heritage and unmistakeable style of Italian motoring whilst also shining a spotlight on hill climb racing, one of the oldest forms of motorsport in the world.

One of the drivers, Peter from Stroud, brought along his Alfa Romeo Giulia Intensa to the event.

“The car is a special version of the two litre turbo. It’s my fourth Alfa Romeo and I just love the way it drives.”

Every driver attending the event is guaranteed four runs up the hill, however the event itself is non-competitive.

“The hardest part of the track is the uphill hairpin. Every time I drive this track, that is always the biggest challenge for me.”

For many drivers , the challenge of hill climb racing lies in its simplicity. Unlike wheel-to-wheel racing, competitors tackle the course individually, racing against the clock on a track that leaves little room for error. Prescott’s combination of tight corners, changing gradients and fast straights has helped to cement its reputation as one of the most iconic hill climb venues in the UK.

Events like this are designed not only to celebrate classic and modern performance cars but to also introduce new audiences to the world of hill climb racing.

Unlike larger racing series like F1, the paddock at hill climb racing events is often far more accessible, giving spectators the chance to speak directly with drivers, mechanics and car owners.

Events like Prescott Italia are also about preserving automotive heritage. Alongside modern supercars were decades old classics that owners have spent years restoring and maintaining. These vehicles are then able to continue being driven rather than simply being displayed in garages or museums.

The welcoming atmosphere is a major part of what keeps people coming back. Despite its popularity, there is a recognised need to bring a younger audience to hill climb events. Events like this play an important role in encouraging more people to attend and get involved in the vibrant, thrilling hill climb community.

Prescott’s events calendar is packed with plenty of events as we head into the summer, ranging from classic car shows to supercars. The most notable event is the finale of the British Hill Climb Championship in September, which is a well-anticipated and popular event to attend.

As the sound of engines slowly died away, the event once again highlighted why Prescott Hill remains such a special part of the UK motorsport scene.
