Forest Green Rovers Women travel to MAP in a top-of-the-table clash with momentum after back-to-back wins

Forest Green Rovers Women look to close the gap to the top of the table when they take on Marine Academy Plymouth Ladies on Sunday in the South West Regional Women’s Premier Division.

Head of women’s football Louise Fensome is “confident” that Forest Green can do the double over league leaders MAP when they meet away from home.

MAP currently sit top of the table with 39 points, 10 clear of second placed FGR but they have played two games more. They’ve only suffered one defeat all season, but that was at the hands of Sunday’s opponents courtesy of an Irene Aguado strike in September.

“That performance was one of the best performances of the season for us,” Fensome said. “Since then we’ve built on what we are about and what we do so we’re feeling pretty confident heading into the game even though it’s away in Plymouth.”

The away side come into the game on the back of a positive result last weekend against bottom placed side AFC St Austell. Rhian Robbins put Rovers in front early on before an Erin Williams double saw the lead extend to three before the break. Williams completed her hat-trick in the second half alongside two from Tyra Wilson and one from Tori Taylor which completed a 7-0 victory.

“Really impressed,” Fensome added on the Austell result. “It was really nice for the players to go out and enjoy their football and score lots of goals, and also do what was asked of them by the coaching staff.

“Momentum is building, it’s weird because you get to this point in the season and we’re still continuing to get better and better so our last few games that we have will be really interesting matches.”

Forest Green’s schedule has hit a busy point with three games in six days with MAP on Sunday followed by a Thursday trip to Kayte Lane for the Gloucestershire County Cup Semi Finals against Cheltenham Town before a climax at The New Lawn on Saturday, March 15 against Pucklechurch Sports.

Still, managing the squad is “really difficult,” Fensome added. “We play to our strengths when we can, knowing our opposition and what they’re about so making sure we’re giving the players the right minutes.”
