“I’m just continuing to give everything my best effort”- University of Gloucestershire’s Ffion Johns netball defender on road to recovery

University of Gloucestershire netball star Ffion Johns has vowed to come back better than ever after her season-ending ankle injury.

Johns only joined the netball team this year after previously competing in swimming.

The 19-year-old revealed she gained an injury at the start of the season which ended her time on the team earlier than she thought.

“I injured my ankle about a month ago now, I did all my ligaments on the outside and the inside, so it isn’t great,” she said.

“Netball is a fast paced, contact sport and any wrong move you can injure yourself very quickly.

“It has affected me more mentally that I can’t play, and the fact is that I miss it very much.”

Despite being out of action, Johns looks ahead to her anticipated return and sets sights on her goals for next year.

“I think my goals for next year are to get back to playing to how I was before or maybe even better.

“I feel like being on the sidelines I’ve learned even more than when I was playing as I am able to see how all of the girls are playing and when I go back, I hope to adapt some of those skills within my own play.”

“I am just continuing to work really hard and give everything my best effort.”

Johns’ decision to switch over from the water sport to the courts was sparked by a desire to play in a team atmosphere.

“I guess being a swimmer is more of a solo game and then being able to build my teamwork skills within netball and play every single week on a Wednesday is the main reason.

“Last year, I used to watch all the netball matches so being able to be a part of the team that plays on a Wednesday is so nice.”
