Former Forest Green midfielder Anthony Barry named by England as assistant to Thomas Tuchel

Former Forest Green Rovers midfielder Anthony Barry has become the assistant manager of the England National Team.

Barry joined Forest Green in May 2013, following a three-year spell with Fleetwood Town.

In August 2013, he made his debut for the Gloucestershire club in an impressive 8-0 victory against Hyde at the New Lawn.

The 38-year-old went on to make 36 appearances, before joining Accrington Stanley after a lack of game time with Rovers in the 2014-15 season.

The widely experienced English coach has worked alongside the new England manager Thomas Tuchel at Chelsea and Bayern Munich most recently.

Barry’s first major job came in 2020, being the assistant manager of Chelsea under Frank Lampard and his predecessors Tuchel and Graham Potter.

Tuchel enjoyed working with Barry so much that when he was appointed by Bayern, the German powerhouse had to pay a fee of £1 million. He was also responsible for all the team’s set pieces during his time in Germany.

Therefore, it was no shock that when Tuchel was announced on Wednesday morning, the Englishman was listed as his assistant.

As well as having multiple roles in club football, Barry has also worked with Roberto Martinez with both Portugal and Belgium’s national teams, so this new position is familiar to him.

In the recent press conference unveiling the new boss, FA CEO Mark Bullingham held Barry in high regard.

“We are delighted that Anthony is joining us, he is one of the most exciting young English coaches around,” he said.

“Our recruitment process has been very thorough. Before the Euros, we had a contingency plan and outlined exactly the qualities we would be looking for in a coach.”
