Shrewsbury Town manager, Paul Hurst, states that “the performances have been better” after a 1-0 defeat against Wigan Athletic at Crowd Meadow.
After their unfortunate result, Salop now remain in 19th place on the League One table within very close distance of the relegation zone, with Wigan Athletic moving up to 13th. When asked for his initial thoughts after the game, Hurst replied:
“I don’t think that the performance overall deserved, from the players that they deserve to lose the game.
“But ultimately, we have and you know we have to try to change that because I think the general consensus and what I’ve been told. I think that the performances have been better.” he stated.
“I can’t really knock the players in terms of an effort point of view, I was disappointed with the start we made. I think we Took 20 minutes, probably to get started, and whether that’s a knock on of the previous two games, that’s how it looked.
“And that sort of performance overall, I’m not saying it was brilliant, but I think what they did is they kept going and got on top.
The Shrewsbury manager also added that his side should have received a penalty, after Chey Dunkley had been reportedly hit, after having his shirt ripped over his head by his opponent.
“Shay Dunkley has his shirt ripped over his head. He then has a sort of punch thrown at him, all in line that the referee should be seeing. I didn’t see it at the time, but I’ve just seen it back.
“It’s almost comical. It’s that bad what’s going on there. So we all know that there’s physical contact and tussling and so on. That is way too far. As in, it has to be a penalty.”
Shrewsbury Town’s next fixtures are vital in enabling that they can push up the table before it’s too late,
With the bottom of the table looking very close in terms of points, every game is vital for Shrewsbury to prevent them from moving into the relegation zone.
“It’s very, very tight. As it stands, we’ve got obviously enough games and points to play for where it’s still in our hands .
“I’m not gonna deny that I haven’t studied it, I’ve had a quick glance, but ultimately we have got to look at ourselves first and foremost.”
