Race for the Gloucestershire Northern Senior League Golden Boot heats up

Gloucestershire Northern Senior League Division One top scorers, Ben Dolbear and Lee Smith, go head-to-head on Saturday as Dursley Town host Tredworth Tigers at The Rec.

Dolbear is having a season to remember for Dursley as he has found the net 10 time in 10 appearances this season including five in his last three.

Last season Dolbear only managed to find the net four times having entered the first team during the second half of the season.

“He started the end of last year playing in the reserve team.

“We took him with us at the end of last year for a bit of cover and he proved to be very good. He can play anywhere, so versatile,” Karl Nash said.

Nash has been impressed with the contributions Dolbear has given his side this season and believes he has been a hidden gem within the club.

“He has been magic, it’s been really good for me. I think he’s been a hidden gem.

“I heard everyone saying how good Ben Dolbear was. He’d a good season a couple of years in our under 18s, before moving into the reserves,” Nash said.

Dolbear could potentially be the difference for Dursley if they are to come away with a result against the league leaders on Saturday.

But it will be hard for Dursley as they come against the league’s top scorer in Lee Smith.

At the ripe age of 40-years-old, Smith has managed to find the back of the net 20 times in all competitions including the only goal in his sides Reg Davis Memorial Cup final defeat to Brockworth Albion.

“Being on 20 goals at this early stage is good but that’s down to the team creating chances and myself getting fit and knowing I could score goals even at 40 years old.

“My aim is to just do what’s best for the club and me scoring will only help that on the pitch,” Smith said.

Both players are chasing down the league high of last season which fell with Chalford AFC’s striker, Jack Hughes, who found the net an astonishing 45 times across all competitions.

It will be some tasks for both players to try and reach that milestone but at the rate they are scoring, they should both defiantly hit personal bests for the season.

Dursley Town versus Tredworth Tigers in the Gloucestershire Northern Senior League kicks off at 2pm on Saturday at the Rec.
