Cheltenham Town legend Steve Cotterill linked with Bristol Rovers post after sacking of Joey Barton

Bristol Rovers are being linked with multiple managers after the sacking of Joey Barton, with no certainty on who could be chosen just yet.

The controversial ex-Man City player was dismissed just yesterday following an indifferent start to the season, and the list of candidates to replace him is getting ever longer.

Cheltenham Town legend Steve Cotterill has been heavily linked with the job as of recent, and as the most successful manager in the club’s history, he wouldn’t be a bad option.

Cotterill was born in Cheltenham and played for the club early on in his career, before returning as a manager to lift the Robins from the Southern Football League to the Second Division before departing.

With three promotions in five-and-a-half years at the club, he is more than capable of joining the Gas and helping them to kick on with their season.

Another Gloucestershire figure linked with the job is former Forest Green Rovers manager Mark Cooper.

Cooper played for the Nailsworth-based side towards the end of his career before being appointed as manager of the club in 2016.

It was here that he would make history, helping FGR achieve promotion to the Football League for the first time ever.

Clearly capable of taking on a challenge, Cooper could be a good option for Bristol Rovers.

Former Cheltenham Town manager Gary Johnson is also in the running for the Rovers post, and is currently in charge of Torquay United.

Johnson took charge of the Robins in 2015 and helped them become the first team since 1989 to win the National League title after being relegated the season before.

It would be a controversial appointment given that Johnson oversaw the Bristol City team that lost in the Championship play-off final in the 2007/08 season, but if the Gas want to see improvement, Johnson could help.
