2022 World Cup begins with defeat for Qatar as Ecuador cruise past hosts 2-0

For the first time in the 92-year history of the World Cup a host nation was defeated in their opening group game as Qatar fell to Ecuador. 

Enner Valencia was the hero for Gustavo Alfaro’s side, despite having an early goal disallowed after a controversial VAR decision he went on to score twice in the contest.

It was a disappointing display from the Asian outfit, who managed to create very little aside from Almoez Ali’s golden opportunity at the end of the first half. 

Both teams will have to take on the Netherlands and Senegal, in their remaining group games, and should Qatar want to come away from this World Cup with any points, their performance requires significant improvement.
