Last night Cheltenham Town managed to reach the semi-final of the Papa John’s Trophy for the first time in the club’s history after a convincing second half display in a 3-1 victory over Salford City.
The Robins conceded an early goal when Callum Hendry acrobatically finished past Luke Southwood from close range, giving the away side the lead.
Right before the break, the ball flashed across the box which saw Welshman Ryan Broom smash the ball into the back of the net to equalise.
Two goals in the space of a minute from Luke Sercombe and new signing Will Goodwin saw the Robins put the home side in the lead for the first time in the game.
With the game ending 3-1, Wade Elliot and his side turn their attention to Saturday to find out who they will face in the last four of the competition. League One sides, Bolton, Accrington and Plymouth has joined Cheltenham in the semi-finals after winning their quarter final clashes.
What is the ideal semi-final fixture for Cheltenham fans?
Cheltenham Town fan Jaden Hughes said: “I think the best option for us would be Bolton, we know that they are beatable, we beat them earlier on in the season but they are a tough side which means if they go out we don’t have the heart brake of Plymouth at Wembley.
Another Cheltenham fan Harry Diamond said: “I Think Accrington would be the ideal fixture because I would not like to face Plymouth, they are a good side, top of the league and likewise Bolton is a solid side pushing for the playoffs. Accrington are in the relegation zone so I think for are standard, A home tie to Accrington would be best.
Gloucestershire Live and Cheltenham Town reporter Jon Palmer said: “I think the big thing Cheltenham will be hoping for on Saturday is a home tie, whoever they get weather it was Plymouth, Bolton or Accrington, it’s going to be a tough game but I think it’s quite rare that their you get competition with the semi-finals with one leg with home advantage, I think that if you do get drawn at home, you are in a good position.
“Whichever one of those three teams we face will be tough, they are all in League One, they have all shown they are good sides playing against Cheltenham this season already but given the choice I think Wade Elliott wouldn’t admit this but would probably prefer Accrington at home.”
Fans will be able to watch the draw for the Papa John’s Trophy on Sky Sports on Saturday 14 January following the Sky Bet Championship fixture between Rotherham United and Blackburn Rovers.
