“We should have enough against a struggling Saints side” – Journalist previews Manchester City’s trip to Southampton

Journalist Charlie Gordon is sure that Manchester City can continue into the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night as they take on Southampton at Saint Mary’s Stadium.

Pep Guardiola’s side will look to extend their six game unbeaten streak after sweeping Chelsea aside in a 4-0 victory at the Etihad Stadium in the FA Cup third round, with the Saints also joining the Manchester club in the fourth round after their 2-1 away win to Crystal Palace.

The two sides previously met back in October at the Etihad which saw a dominate City side win 4-0 which saw highflying Erling Haaland add to his goal tally.

Manchester City are fighting for the league title once again, currently sitting second in the table, five points behind Arsenal whereas Southampton sit rock bottom, battling to stay up.

Saints manager Nathan Jones will need to find a way to hit the away side on the counter, with the Cityzens looking to control the ball the whole game.

Gordon said: “It will be interesting to see how Pep approaches the game selection-wise with a trip to Old Trafford looming and ground to make up on Arsenal in the Premier League.”

“As firm favourites of the eight teams remaining in the EFL Cup, there’s a lot to be said for City going strong in pursuit of the season’s first silverware, but we should have enough against a struggling Southampton side to come out on top even if we rotate.”

Gordon then spoke on Southampton: ” The Saints have a couple of obvious dangermen with Che Adams on four EFL Cup goals for the campaign, putting him top of the pile, while James Ward-Prowse is an elite set-piece taker.”

Gordon continued with his thoughts on City: ” As for City, Julian Alvarez and Rico Lewis could have big parts to play with both stars working towards more prominent roles in the squad. All things considered, I’d predict a 2-0 win.”
