We Predicted Forest Green Rovers’ last seven games as Rob Edwards’ side look to secure promotion to League One

Forest Green Rovers claimed a vital 1-0 victory against Mansfield at the New Lawn earlier this week, edging Rovers ever closer to a promotion into League One.

It would be simple enough to predict their final seven fixtures, but given the ever-changing landscape of League Two – we decided to let Football Manager 2022 make the predictions for us.

With that in mind, here are the results that we ended up with.

Forest Green Rovers 0-1 Hartlepool United

Next up for Rob Edwards’ men tomorrow is a home tie against Hartlepool United in which the hosts will be hopeful of extending their winning streak to four matches against an inconsistent Pool side.

Football Manager predicted that it wouldn’t be a great showing at home from Rovers, as they fell to a 1-0 defeat allowing the chasing pack to regain ground on the league leaders.

Barrow 1-2 Forest Green Rovers

Rovers have very rarely failed to react to defeats under the stewardship of Edwards, with this time being no different.

Jamille Matt and Jack Aitchison would both net in the victory, however the result would be overshadowed by the injury of key man Nicky Cadden – as he broke his ankle with just minutes left in the match.

Forest Green Rovers 1-0 Oldham

After the loss of Cadden, bit-part loanee Kasey McAteer was called upon to fill the berth usually occupied by the Scotsman.

McAteer would step up to the task, putting in a solid shift as Jamille Matt netted yet another goal to shift Rovers onto 84 points in the league table.

Bristol Rovers 2-1 Forest Green Rovers

With Joey Barton’s Bristol Rovers side still well in the hunt for an automatic promotion spot, former FGR man Aaron Collins netted from the spot to put the pressure on Edwards’ team.

Bailly Cargill scored a rare goal in the 87th minute which seemed destined to claim a point for the visitors, only for Luca Hoole to score at the death and give Bristol Rovers a much-needed win.

Swindon Town 1-1 Forest Green Rovers

A tie which needs no introduction, Rovers’ trip to the County ground was always going to cause fireworks; the reverse fixture in front of the Sky cameras which would see Harry McKirdy claim all the plaudits in a 2-0 victory.

Jamille Matt would net an early goal for the visitors, but Harry McKirdy continued to haunt Rovers, netting in the 66th minute as both sides were forced to settle for a point.

Forest Green Rovers 3-2 Harrogate Town

Coming into the fixture sat on 85 points, the hosts needed a win to distance themselves from the chasing pack at the top of the league table.

Rovers reacted superbly, with goals from Jack Aitchison, Jamille Matt and Jordan Moore-Taylor all netting in a thrilling victory at the New Lawn.

Mansfield 2-4 Forest Green Rovers

As Rovers approached the finale of a long and successful season, a win against Nigel Clough’s side would be a perfect way to round off their 2021/22 campaign.

Rob Edwards’ side would sign off in style, with Kane Wilson, Jack Aitchison, Jamille Matt and Josh March netting in a 4-2 rout at the One Call Stadium.

Final Thoughts

Seven games, four wins, two losses and a draw. That’s how Football Manager predicted that Forest Green Rovers would round off a historic season for the club.

Should reality match up with the real world, Rovers would end up registering 91 points in total for the season. It would guarantee promotion.

Given that Exeter could only manage a total of 92 points in the unlikely event that they win each of their remaining seven fixtures, 91 points would surely give Rovers a great chance of lifting the League Two title.
