UOGWFC left ‘disappointed’ by seven goal win in BUCS game versus Aberystwyth

Goals from captain Gipsy Viveash and Emily Petteford saw UOGWFC towards a 7-0 victory on Wednesday.

A heavy victory was expected as the University of Gloucestershire Womens 1s hosted Aberystwyth in League action at Plock Court. The scoring was opened in the sixth minute when Lauren Phillips drove home into the top left corner after early frustration in front of goal which could have seen the home side two goals up already.

Viveash found the net from a cutback three minutes later to double the lead but a pre-match target of twenty looked growingly unlikely as it took another twenty minutes to make it three. Emily Petteford found the net but more frustration followed. Phillips forced a good save from the keeper and a great run from Viveash saw a bending effort fly agonisingly wide of the right post.

Half time saw the teams go in far closer than expected with the horrid weather conditions playing a part in the low quality of the encounter. The rain calmed in the second forty five, seeing the quality improve and more shots find the net.

Destiny Mcdonald-Ferguson converted a corner on the hour mark with Phillips hitting the post again just a minute later with Petteford having hit the woodwork five minutes before. Ellie Windo made it five before substitute Kaycee Napper scored the sixth. With five minutes to go it was seven as Viveash got her second of the game to make the scoreline reflect the one sided encounter far more.

The visitor’s only shots came from their own half, resorting to shooting from kick off after the sixth and seventh goals but neither came close to troubling Hannah Hughes in the Gloucestershire net.

Striker Emily Petteford reflected on a frustrating day in front of goal but an overall good performance:

“I think we were good. We weren’t clinical at times, but we passed the ball well. Everyone moved for the ball well and obviously got a good win so happy days.

“I think we’ll be doing that [practicing shooting] on Monday. We weren’t good enough in front of goal, so it should have been a lot more.”

“We’ve only lost one game so far (this season), so I think as a team we’re quite confident that we know we’re going to win, but sometimes it’s a case of can we score the right goals to get the win? But we will be confident going forward. We’re away to Swansea 2s next week, so we should get another win.”

Goalkeeper coach Ben Ware also spoke on his frustration but was overall pleased with the result:

“I can’t lie, it’s not often you can be 7-0 winners and still disappointed. Going into the game we were (thinking) double digits, maybe even 20 and then we haven’t been able to play our game. The weather didn’t help, but a lot of the time we were guilty of just overplaying, trying to do too much and the finishing wasn’t where we needed it to be. We won 7-0, but I can never be pleased, apparently.

“You’d like to think it would (boost confidence), but I guess footballers are a bit weird. Like, ‘yeah, I scored two but wanted the hat trick and I missed this and that chance’. I think some of them do really well off of that and some will be annoyed by how they played individually.”
