University of Gloucestershire E-Sport Round-Up: The Valorant, CS:GO and League of Legends teams hold on as the Overwatch squad begins to gather momentum

The result of the Overwatch team’s matches tonight will determine whether they are able to make it to play-offs or their season ends here.

Overwatch went 2-1 on Monday, ahead of their final week of qualifiers.

The Goats have shown steady progress, walking away with their winningest week yet after a star performance from Jon, their secondary support on Zenyatta and Kiriko, last Monday.

Ahead of their must-win matches tonight, main support player Alex said: “Our team coordination seems to be getting a lot better, we are picking our targets and we’re calling them a lot more.

“We do a lot of thinking after games, it tends to be after each map rather than after each set, so if we do poorly on one map, then we’ll talk about what we can do better before the next map.”

This level of communication is what Alex attributes their wins to, through thorough discussion between maps, they are able to develop their playstyles and assess their play between maps, ultimately adapting to win a series.

“At the most recent E-Sports final, everyone was playing the same comp, and University teams just started playing that into us, because obviously it’s the best thing they can do and it works.

“But we found that we weren’t comfortable on all of those picks, so we adapted a comp that would disrupt their playstyle and forced them to switch and play around us.

“We found that especially in our last couple series, we were forcing people to play around Tyler on D. Va, or our DPS not playing what is considered meta.”

The squad needs to win both of their last two fixtures in qualifiers to be in the top 15 again.

“Our games tomorrow are our last seeding matches before they split us into groups for tournaments,

“And if we had one more win, or three more points, we would be top 16 but we lost games we definitely shouldn’t have.”

The Goats play their next games starting at 19:00 GMT tonight.

Valorant 1-1 for the fourth time in four weeks.

“We just win one game lose one game every week,” was all Valorant team captain Yianni had to say about the recent weeks.

The team has been struggling in recent weeks, slow improvement has been made, but they have yet to walk away from a week with more than a single win.

According to the captain, their aim is solid, the team only struggles with map control, and “It’s something you only get good at from playing a lot, but people have been helping each other improve in that area, so we got this.”

The squad plays their next two fixtures on Thursday.

CS:GO goes to triple overtime against Oxford, finishing the week 1-1.

In their first game of the week, the UOG CS:GO team went to triple overtime against University of Oxford, but eventually crumbled, losing 20-22 after the third extension.

After their narrow defeat in game one, the squad bounced back with force and closed out game two with a score of 16-12 against University of Bath.

The team is currently placed 61st in the standings with a total of four game wins, and are set to play their next fixtures on Tuesday.

League of Legends squad show signs of weakness, with worst week on record: 1-2.

The Goats had momentum at the start of the season, with two 2-1 weeks in the past four, and one 1-1 week.

But this past week has been historically bad for the squad, with losses to University of Plymouth and Oxford Brookes University, and a singular win over University of Birmingham.

As the team gets higher in the seeding, it is only expected that the matches will be harder, with average ranks increasing as well as team coordination and individual proficiency.

The Goats are still within striking distance of top eight, and play their next fixtures on Wednesday night.
