TRANSFER NEWS-Wayne Rooney arrives in Washington ahead of DC move

Wayne Rooney has arrived in Washington ahead of his proposed move from Everton to DC United. Rooney rejoined his boyhood club in 2017 after 13 years at Manchester United and was thier top scorer last season with 11 goals.

Despite this, Rooney fell out of favour under Sam Allardyce in the second half of the season but the former England manager was sacked despite guiding Everton to an eighth place finish.

Nothing is yet agreed between the two parties but a source told The Washington Post that the former England captain had already been house hunting in the city.

“Wayne is genuinely interested in the city and wants to get a better feel for it.

“By no means is it a done deal, but it’s a step in the right direction.” said the source who had requested anonymity.

Rooney had been on holiday with his family in Barbados but cut it short and flew into National Reagan airport last night for talks and a potential medical.

Rooney will tour the city with meet with managing general partner Jason Levien and General Manager Dave Kasper before paying a visit to DC United’s home ground Audi Field which is currently under construction.

DC United sit bottom of the Eastern Conference with just two wins from their 9 games and the squad are on the West Coast preparing to face LA FC.

The MLS new boys have impressed since arriving and are coached by former Swansea manager Bob Bradley.

If Rooney was to sign he could start training with the squad immediately but would be ineligible to play until July 10th when the MLS Transfer window opens. That would mean he could play 20 league games, 15 of which would be at Audi Field.
