Preview: Wrexham AFC vs Newport County AFC

The SToK Cae Ras stadium will host one of the most exciting rivalries in EFL League Two on Saturday 23rd December as Newport County travel up to North Wales.

Despite the two clubs being three hours apart from each other, this heated derby day is definitely one to keep an eye on.

The Welsh clubs last played each other five years ago in the second round of the FA Cup at Rodney Parade as The Exiles embarrassed The Red Dragons 4-0 on home soil.

The Welsh Derby was sold out by Wrexham and Newport fans within a couple of hours, with many away fans complaining about not getting a ticket because of ‘glory supporters’ and believes there have been some home fans buying tickets in the away end.

The SToK Cae Ras has a normal capacity of 10,771 but Wrexham released a statement announcing a temporary stand will be built adding an extra 2,289 home fans after a high demand of tickets.

Wrexham currently sit 2nd in the league and are looking very likely to be promoted by the end of the season.

Newport are in a comfortable 15th position on 25 points, just six points off the play-offs.

The Exiles have been unlucky this season in terms of injuries with key players like Seb Palmer-Houlden, Kyle Jameson, Adam Lewis and many more being sidelined for long periods of time.

Left back, Lewis, announced that every player should be available for the derby, boosting the confidence of the Newport fans.

There is one more game week before the 23rd with Wrexham hosting 22nd Colchester United and Newport hosting 19th Grimsby Town who should both come away with the three points.

Caitlin Webb, a Newport fan who travels home and away week in week out says:

“Obviously it’s a massive game for both teams, Wrexham will definitely be wanting to get their one back on Newport after the play-off final in 2013 and as for Newport, with all this famous fortune now with Wrexham, they’ll be wanting to beat them more than ever. With the sold out away end and sold out home end it’s going to be a big occasion.

It’s the first time they’ve played each other in the league since 2013 and that was in the National League Conference at the time. So it’ll be interesting to see each other play in the football league for the first time since the 80’s.”
