Preview: Forest Green Rovers vs Colchester United as Rob Edwards’ side hope to extend League Two lead

Forest Green Rovers head coach, Rob Edwards wants to avoid any complacency as his side look to extend their lead at the top of League Two.

“We’ve had a few warning shots fired at us last week but we’ve got to make sure we’re at it”

Rovers host struggling Colchester United on Tuesday. Sitting seven points clear with a game in hand, they’ll be looking for a return to winnings ways after a poor 0-0 draw against Exeter last time out.

“We’ll be looking to get back to winning ways”

Finishing off their triple header at home, Rovers will want to capitalise on a Colchester side without a win in the league since late November. Edwards remained cautious, acknowledging the dangers Colchester can pose to his side.

“Colchester look a real threat going forward”

The last meeting between the sides came in February 2021, as Forest Green Rovers claimed an impressive 3-0 victory over Colchester at home.

After a productive week on the training ground, Edwards praised his sides’ mentality.

“The lads have been first class and are raring to go”

Scoring 27 league goals between them, Jamille Matt and Mathew Stevens will be hoping to continue their goal-scoring form.

As for team news, Rovers will be without Ebou Adams who is currently representing The Gambia at the Africa Cup of Nations. Aside from Adams, Rovers carry a clean bill of health into the game.

Colchester on the other hand will be without key players Ryan Clampin, Shamal George, Miles Welch-Hayes and Frank Nouble.

Edwards remained quiet on any transfer rumours, seeming very happy with his current squad.

“We’re happy with the group we’ve got but we’re ready to react if we need to”

“What we don’t want to do is upset the balance and bring people in unnecessarily”

Hayden Mullins’ side enter the clash in a bad run of form but Edwards maintained that they’d provide a tough test with no points guaranteed in such a competitive league.

“If we’re not at it, it’s going to be a real tough game”

Match Prediction: Forest Green should come away with the three points here. Colchester will have to produce a performance of the season if they’re to get anything. They’ll be hoping a hangover from Rovers recent poor display could affect their mentality coming into Tuesdays game. With all but one key players available for Rovers, I’m predicting a comfortable 3-0 win for Forest Green. Let us know your thoughts on our Twitter!
