Our Covid Heroes: Being a Criminal Justice Administrator – “I found it hard because everything was new… not just the job”

After he was made redundant from his previous job due to the pressures of Covid-19, Harry Hilsdon managed to find a new one within the police force.

Harry Hilsdon now works as a criminal justice administrator in Oxfordshire. The 23-year-old’s training for his current job was much different to anything that he had experienced before: “I found it hard because everything was new… not just the job”.

With the Coronavirus restrictions and extra safety precautions having an impact on every workplace, everyone has had to adjust to the new normal.

Ever since Harry has started work in his office, there have been a number of safety measures in place: “When I’m in the office I wear a mask at all times and follow a one-way system around the building. All training is now done online”.

But the restrictions also mean that many are working from home.

The new normal – working from home

Originally, Harry was predominately working in the office despite the pandemic. But since there was a positive case of Coronavirus in his office, things have changed: “We’ve now been put on a rota. Every 4-6 weeks we’ll have a 2 week stint in the office”.

Working from home has not been without its challenges though, Harry feels that it has meant the job has “lost a sense of community”. He said the two biggest downsides is that it is harder to manage workloads and ask for advice when he needs it. But one positive of being at home has meant that he gained two new colleagues: “I get to be with my two Shih Tzu’s – Ted and Lulu. I think they enjoy it!”.

Now Harry feels more used to the way things are and is more confident working remotely. He looks forward to when things get back to normal where he will finally see what his job is like without the difficulties of living amidst a pandemic.
