Non-League Day: What is it and the teams involved in and around Gloucestershire

Non-League Day is back, a great spectacle that promotes the true brilliance of Non-League football in England.

Scheduled to occur when the spring international break comes around, the day is a great opportunity for fans of clubs without a game to go and support a local team.

Founded by James Doe in 2010, the organisation has gone from strength to strength and is widely backed by high level teams across the country.

In addition, with no Forest Green Rovers game this weekend and with Cheltenham facing a long trip to Sheffield Wednesday, many fans may be looking to fill their football gap.

Here’s three of the most notable non-league games in Gloucestershire available for your viewing pleasure this weekend.

Gloucester City vs AFC Fylde:

It’s set to be a nerve jangling but exciting end to Gloucester City’s season as the highest placed non-league team in Gloucestershire find themselves toward the bottom of the Vanarama National League North.

But after a couple of wins and a brilliant comeback to draw 3-3 with Chester on Tuesday night, there’s a little bit more breathing room for Lee Mansell’s side.

This Saturday with nine games left of their season, they take on promotion chasing AFC Fylde who are looking for a return to the National League after their relegation a few years previous.

With the hope of some more nice weather it’ll be a great day out in a season that seen Gloucester return to their newly reinvigorated New Meadow Park.

With Cheltenham on the road away to Sheffield Wednesday, this may be one that entices the football fan from down the road.

Bishop’s Cleeve vs Worcester Raiders:

Off the back of their 11-2 win over Shrivenham on Tuesday night, Bishop’s Cleeve won their first league title in 35 years, after being crowned the champions of the Hellenic League Premier Division.

It was a great achievement for boss and former Cheltenham Town captain Paul Collicutt who was also in charge for the Mitres’ only other promotion to the Southern League back in 2006.

After winning the title with the one league game against Brimscombe and Thrupp left, their eyes are now looking toward next season.

This weekend it’s cup action back at the recently renovated Kayte Lane as they take on Worcester Raiders in the early stages of Bluefin Sports Challenge Cup.

Its really worth the trip to such a great ground, so go and get behind Colly and the team as they attempt to cap off a brilliant season by winning the league and cup double

Cirencester Town vs Willand Rovers:

John Brough and Cirencester Town are involved in a real promotion battle at the top of the Pitching In Southern League Division One South.

Currently sitting just two points behind league leaders Frome Town, Cirencester will be hoping to get back on top of the tree after falling off recently.

This Saturday, they take on mid table Willand Rovers at The Corinium Stadium in the hope of applying some pressure on the leaders who face Larkhall Athletic.

Its the home stretch now for the Centurions so get down there on the weekend and help them on their push for the title.

Again with Summer on the way, its got all the ingredients for a real advert of eighth tier football.
