Noah Jenkins, hooker for University of Gloucestershire’s Rugby Union first team is preparing for his first Varsity representing University of Gloucestershire against University of Worcester on Wednesday 19th May.
“I’m really really excited, really nervous as well, we had an inter-club game a couple of weeks ago and having that level of physicality thrown at you it’s a lot to take in but it’s one of the most enjoyable things being out on the pitch again and having a good time with the boys so yeah couldn’t be more excited.”
Due to the recent pandemic, Varsity was unable to take place last year meaning second-year Jenkins has been unable to experience the most talked about fixture of UOG’s sporting calendar.
“I’ve never played in varsity I feel like I’ve missed out and I’m just dying to play in it now, it sounds like the biggest thing that could possibly come with being a university rugby player.
“I’ve never played against Worcester before which is crazy to think I’m going into my third year of uni and haven’t played against Worcester yet but I’m sure they will be a strong side, years previously they’ve always given us a good game but I think we’ll have the edge over them.”
UOG have managed to come out victorious in the last four meetings between the two Universities 1st Rugby Union teams and will be looking to go for five in a row. This year round it has a completely different feel to it though with training heavily disrupted due to the pandemic.
“Last year’s varsity camp was a lot more heavy, we did a lot more training and a lot more time in the gym, this year has been more about just getting the boys on the pitch and playing this camp.”
“We’ve got boys with experience, we’ve got a great crop of freshers that came in this year, all really hungry all looking to get into the squad, all learning constantly and trying their best so I think we’ll get the win no doubt.”
